Meet Aasim Khan. Aasim is an AWS certified solution architect with solid product development background. We spoke to Aasim about his role at GapMaps, data in the 21st century, how GapMaps ensure data security, new features coming to the GapMaps platform in 2020 and some of his favourite things to do. Read on.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your work experience.
I was born and raised in Pakistan and moved to Melbourne in 2017. I have 12+ years of professional experience in designing and developing applications in open source technologies. In the last 6 years, I have helped multiple startup companies in building scalable & fault-tolerant products.
What’s your role with GapMaps and what do you enjoy most about your role?
Being a Senior Architect and Lead Developer, my role is to design and develop GapMaps application and solutions according to business needs using the best suitable tech-stack. The most challenging and enjoyable aspect of my role is to make sure that GapMaps is aligned with the latest technologies and trends for future needs.
Throughout your career, how you have seen the use of data evolve?
In my opinion, data is the gold of the 21st century. The term Big Data emerged when I was doing my Bachelor of Computer Engineering. Since then data is growing rapidly and this trend will continue.
Businesses must be equipped to manage data growth and they should be able to take timely fact-based decisions to survive and to be more successful. Recently a lot of startups have emerged with awesome products for data analysis using data science and machine learning techniques.
What’s most exciting about building the new version for GapMaps?
When I joined GapMaps it was a monolith application and was not scalable. Since then we have come a long way and currently rebuilding the GapMaps application using microservice architecture which not only fixes the scalability issue, but it gives us the flexibility to choose technology that best suits the business need.
Tell us a bit more about the features you worked on for GapMaps.
We are in a phase of redesigning the whole application, so I am part of multiple core features. The feature I would specifically want to mention is data security. Although we have a special focus on data security in the current GapMaps version as well, with the new version we are taking our data security measures to the next level.
How we collect client’s feedback for GapMaps and how we put it back in the platform?
Using our in-app feedback function we collect ideas and feature requests from clients which then goes into our development pipeline for consideration.
Tell us a bit about how GapMaps ensure our data is accurate and fully updated.
We have a data team dedicated to maintaining our data sets. Data is derived from multiple sources including public data, user feedback and third-party directory/business listings. Data refreshes and validation are scheduled on a frequency depending on the industry. E.g. if a fast food business is rapidly expanding in a country then would escalate the refresh cycle. For a business that might operate large format stores that take a long time to build and open it might be sufficient to update that on a less frequent cycle.
